Series 1: 1. Soweto

Clive kicks off his adventure in South Africa, where 20 years ago he worked as a BBC correspondent. Sometimes called the rainbow nation for its colourful mix of cultures and languages, South Africa covers nearly half a million square miles and is home to over 60 million people. It’s a land of sophisticated cities, spectacular wildlife, brilliant beaches - and great complexity.\n \nWhen Clive worked here, he was based in the city of Johannesburg. For this visit, Clive is focusing on Soweto, South Africa’s biggest and most famous township, which lies just outside the city. \n \nClive gets dizzy as he jumps into the South African craze for car spinning at the Soweto Drift Academy. His old BBC mate Milton Nkosi introduces him to Ndileka Mandela, the activist granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, the man who inspired Clive to become a journalist, over a traditional spicy South Africa lunch of chakalaka. Clive also picks up some amapiano moves as he parties Soweto style at a car wash and helps create one of Soweto’s famous murals.
