In light of the recent discussions around race, racism and racial inequality sparked by the death of George Floyd, this See Hear special looks at racism within the deaf community.\n\nPresenters Donna Mullings and Ahmed Mudawi examine the general experience of black deaf people in the deaf community. Talking heads give us an insight into life as a black deaf person in Britain.\n\nDonna learns about institutionalised racism and how schools are trying to implement black history in the curriculum as a way of dismantling racism.\n\nAhmed speaks to Ashton Jean-Pierre about the use of racist signs and how they can be eradicated from British Sign Language’s dictionary.\n\nThe presenters learn how the Black Lives Matter movement, which spiked in early 2020, has made deaf organisations and charities reflect, re-evaluate and take steps to become anti-racist and improve the representation of black deaf people across their organisations and charities.\n\nThey also learn what is needed to improve access to mental health services for black deaf people, who can be more susceptible to mental health issues as a result of racial trauma and racial profiling.\n\nThe film ends on a message to white allies on what they can do to aid efforts to dismantle racism within the deaf community.
