Ten-year-old Maria lives with her deeply troubled single mother, Cynthia, who is utterly devoted to her daughter but in the grip of a hoarding obsession, fanatically scavenging discarded and random objects, and living in squalor.\n\nWhen an accident leads to Maria being taken in by Michelle, a foster mother, her life appears to be on an upward trajectory - until Michael, one of Michelle's former charges, returns to stay at his old foster home. A strange and obsessive relationship develops between them.
