A first aid session with St John Ambulance gets everyone thinking differently about care. It’s practical, fast-moving and powered by volunteers. Ordinary people stepping in when it matters most. Natalie hadn’t realised the scale of it.\n\nThen she sees it first-hand. Out with the St John Ambulance team at a busy county show, everything feels relaxed until it suddenly isn’t. A young boy is brought in needing urgent help, and the team move straight into action. They remain calm, focused and reassuring as Natalie watches closely. \n\nBack in college, Anna’s physio class pushes her in a different way. Movement, balance, rebuilding strength – it’s not easy, but it starts to click that recovery isn’t just about the body. How you feel, how you think and how supported you are all play a part.\n\nIn Belfast, that idea comes to life. Within a spinal injury unit at Horatio’s Garden, people spend time reconnecting, not just physically, but mentally too. It’s a space to pause, reset and grow.\n\nNatalie’s placement takes her to a centre supporting veterans adjusting to life beyond the forces. She meets men rebuilding in every sense – physically, mentally and together. The support between them is powerful and makes a big impression on Natalie. She finds herself thinking about the people who show up, the ones who give their time, and how much recovery depends on more than just treatment.
