The Rev Kate Bottley celebrates 160 years of the Salvation Army and its enduring ethos of faith in action.\n\nIn London, Kate meets Jenine Main, UK and Ireland Territorial Leader to discuss the origins of the Salvation Army and how the vision of founders Catherine and William Booth is still alive today. Kate learns how Catherine championed women’s right to preach, a legacy reflected by Jenine and her husband sharing the current leadership role. Together, Jenine and Kate discuss how preaching the message has always gone hand in hand with serving those in need in very practical ways – and how music has always been central to the Army’s work and worship. \n\nNext, we hop on board with Salvation Army core officer Nick in Mitcham, London, who leads a double-decker bus outreach. The bus is a wellbeing hub that combines free food for the homeless, play areas for children, job support and mental health help. Nick sees the bus as a modern reflection of the original Salvation Army motto, 'soup, soap, and salvation' - practical Christianity on the streets.\n\nAnd Kate meets best friends George and Maurice, who met in a Yorkshire Salvation Army band over 80 years ago! They tell Kate about their careers with the International Staff Band and how they performed at iconic venues like the Hollywood Bowl and Buckingham Palace. Even after retirement, George founded the South London Fellowship Band, offering purpose and fellowship for retired Salvationists. Their lifelong friendship and service exemplify the army’s enduring spirit and their deep faith. \n\nWith music from Salvation Army musicians, choirs and congregations, including new hymns from the birthplace of William Booth in Nottingham. \n\n1. O, Church Arise - Nottingham William Booth Memorial Halls \n2. Cornerstone - Nottingham William Booth Memorial Halls \n3. Mighty to Save - Salvation Army, Sale \n4. Make a Joyful Noise - International Staff Songsters, Salvation Army \n5. Send the Fire - Nottingham William Booth Memorial Halls \n6. I’ll Go in the Strength of the Lord - Nottingham William Booth Memorial Halls
