Series 49: 5. Souter Lighthouse

The roadshow travels to Souter Lighthouse in the north east of England, where presenter Fiona Bruce learns about the history of the UK’s first purpose-built, electric-powered lighthouse and the people who kept it running.\n\nTreasures uncovered by our team of experts include a letter signed by Napoleon, a collection of tin-plate vintage toys and an early portrait by David Hockney.\n\nRupert Maas is thrilled to find a dramatic seascape painting by a local artist that was rescued from a skip, while Joanna Hardy is delighted by a quirky gold brooch of a mouse playing the violin.\n\nLisa Lloyd discovers some fabric from the 1960s designed by Zandra Rhodes, which is in remarkable condition after sitting at the bottom of a wardrobe for decades, while Will Farmer becomes emotional when he talks to a young collector who reminds him of himself as a child.\n\nCharlotte Riordan is delighted to discover what she believes may be the one of the earliest known portraits by artist David Hockney, a painting he made of a friend during their school days.\n\nFiona’s antiques knowledge is put to the test by ceramics expert Will Farmer, who challenges her to work out which pieces of historic local glass from the north east are worth the most.
