During the first two decades of the 20th century, life for many in Edinburgh is hard. The demolition of the slums in the Old Town has put pressure on living spaces, and the house on Calton Hill has been subdivided to accommodate more families. \n\nFeatured are the Marshalls, a family of five occupying just two rooms and sharing the floor and toilet with another household; the Ross family, including head prison warder James, who is brutally attacked by an inmate; and Annie Anthony and her son John, a professional soldier who fought a very different sort of war.
