Twelve-year-old Lacy is growing up in rural Massachusetts with her loving mother, Janet, in the summer of 1991. About to enter middle school in a few weeks' time, Lacy has a hard time making friends but has a healthy imagination, and she is captivated by her mother and the variety of the few friends her mother brings home.
