Series 5: 2. Death on Duty

The first case in this episode looks at the investigation into the murders of two young police officers, Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone. Both were gunned down when they were lured to a house in Manchester by a bogus 999 caller. \n\nA known gangland criminal confesses to their murders, then retracts his confession, leaving voice analyst Professor Peter French to make a solid link between the 999 call and the suspect’s voice. The programme includes compelling interviews from BBC correspondent Judith Moritz, former Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy, PC Fiona Bone’s father Paul and PC Nicola Hughes's father Bryn. \n\nIn central London, a phone snatcher on an electric bike is hoping for a fairy-tale ending but ends up getting more than he bargained for when he attempts to steal 65-year-old Canadian Brian De Clare’s phone. When onlookers tackle him, the thief makes off on foot, leaving behind his bike, rucksack and one single shoe, earning himself the nickname Cinderella Thief. \n \nPC Jake Dean from the City of London cycle team is first on scene and locates valuable CCTV footage. But it’s the expertise of director of forensics Tracy Alexander and her team, in analysing the shoe for DNA, that brings an unhappy ending and time in jail for the thief.
