A fresh batch of excited home cooks have arrived at MasterChef’s Birmingham HQ for the second heat of the week, but there’s only space for three of them in the quarter-final. To get there, they will need to win one of four MasterChef aprons and then jump an even higher hurdle that will truly get their pulses racing.\n\nJust two aprons are up for grabs in the first task, which is the signature dish round. Anna Haugh and Grace Dent are simply asking for one plate of food, but this plate will be anything but simple. The cooks will have 90 minutes to create an exceptional dish that has the judges primed for another mouthful. The competitors include a communications expert and a logistics consultant, which might help them manage their workload but won’t be much use if their culinary know-how isn’t a match for the others. Flavours from the Middle East, Asia and Ireland are some of those on offer, but whether they hit the right note with the judges remains to be seen. Anna and Grace will be delivering MasterChef aprons to the two best cooks, who have a guaranteed place in the next round, leaving the future of the other four hanging in the balance.\n\nTo win one of the last two aprons, the four remaining amateur cooks will need to get their A-game on for the classic recipe test. The judges would like each of them to follow a recipe and deliver a decadent dessert. Desserts require precision cooking, but how will the amateurs fare with recipes that don’t include any timings? We are about to find out. It will take skill and a dose of culinary instinct to impress Anna and Grace, who will be hoping for a pudding that is cooked to perfection. The two who fail to shine will see their MasterChef career come to a sticky end, as there’s only room for two in the final round of the night.\n\nThe four lucky cooks who have survived so far will now have to raise the bar, as they each cook their own two best plates of food. These will not only be tasted by the judges but by three diners who know a thing or two about quality cooking – former champions Tom Rhodes (2021), Ping Coombes (2014) and Kenny Tutt (2018). Impressing three people who have won the title and gone on to make exciting waves in the food world is not an easy brief, but one thing is for sure: the amateurs all share the same passion and will go all out to deliver some exceptional food.\n\nAt the end, armed with the critics’ feedback, Anna and Grace will decide which three cooks have enough promise to forge on into the quarter-final, leaving one more amateur hanging up their MasterChef pinny and heading home.
