The Rev Kate Bottley explores the art of hymn writing, meeting modern worship leaders as they aim to craft theologically grounded, meaningful songs that resonate with the lived experience of Christians today.\n\nEach generation produces hymns that reflect its world and language. Kate joins a group of worship leaders determined to write hymns people will truly want to sing – songs that feel relevant today, drawing on themes and words from everyday life while remaining faithful to the Bible.\n\nKate begins with Andy Flannagan, leader of the Boundless project, which seeks to broaden the vocabulary of worship music so that it embraces the realities of daily life. Alongside a gifted team of songwriters and worship leaders, including Noel Robinson, Lucy Grimble, Graham Kendrick, Donna Akodu and others, Andy shares the vision behind the initiative and why it matters. The group is supported by church leader Steve Rouse, who provides theological guidance. A former bricklayer, Steve reflects on his desire for worship music that recognised God’s presence in his tools, his trade and his working life.\n\nAs inspiration flows in the writing workshop, the programme also reflects on the legacy of Bishop Timothy Dudley-Smith, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2026. His son James recalls memories of his father writing hymns – even on family holidays in Cornwall – and speaks of his discipline and deep love of scripture. Anne Harrison, executive vice-president of the Hymn Society and a family friend, examines Dudley-Smith’s craftsmanship, from his careful use of rhyme to his sensitivity to the relationship between words and music.\n\nFinally, we return to the Boundless workshop to enjoy the newly crafted hymns.\n\nWith songs including brand new hymns recorded by the Boundless team:\n\n1. Restore, O Lord – St David’s Church, Exeter, led by Graham Kendrick \n2. This Is the Day – The Mint Methodist Church, Exeter, led by the Boundless project \n3. Lord for the Years – Huddersfield Town Hall \n4. I Go to the Rock – Michelle John, Wayne Ellington and the Sound Foundation in Union Chapel, London \n5. Renovation – The Mint Methodist Church, Exeter \n6. My Heart Is Filled with Thankfulness – Keith and Kristyn Getty in Lisburn Cathedral
