The NHS Counter Fraud Authority investigates a shocking case of a trusted GP practice manager who fiddled the books for years to siphon hundreds of thousands of pounds into her own bank account. The alarm is raised when a GP discovers some odd payments leaving the surgery's bank account. But when he asks the manager about the payments, he becomes suspicious and calls in the Fraud Squad. NHS investigators start looking into the finances of the practice, and when they cross-check payments, they find the practice manager has been routinely transferring NHS money meant to pay doctors into her own personal bank account. When investigators search her house, they find it packed full of luxury items. The manager has been on a spending spree – for dozens of designer handbags and sunglasses, expensive art and even a Rolex watch. \n\nIn another case, a businessman uses government support for the hospitality industry during the Covid pandemic to line his own pockets to the tune of over £100,000. Not only did he fraudulently claim from the furlough scheme, but he saw the Eat Out to Help Out initiative as an opportunity to make even more money. He claimed he was running a hotel with a restaurant and submitted a series of applications for financial support, each one with a higher figure than the last. When the Fraud Squad starts investigating, they discover that not only does his hotel not serve food – it doesn’t even have a kitchen!
