The beautiful Roxanne is courted by the wealthy but charmless Duc de Guiche but has fallen instantly for the handsome Christian, a new recruit to the guards. Unbeknownst to her, she is also loved by Cyrano, a friend since childhood who is too self-conscious to express his love. Cyrano reluctantly helps the hopelessly tongue-tied Christian to woo Roxanne with his passionately eloquent love letters.
