A brand new series of MasterChef continues, and a fresh batch of twelve incredible amateur cooks throw down their culinary gauntlets for the second round of heats. Judges Grace Dent and Anna Haugh invite the first group of six, including a dairy manufacturer, a medical writer and a maths student, to battle for one of four MasterChef aprons. Their day jobs set them apart, but they have one shared goal: to become MasterChef Champion 2026. Their first objective is to secure a place in this week’s quarter-final.\n \nFirst up, the amateurs’ own food is under the judges' scrutiny as they take on the signature dish round. This is a dish that shows off the cook’s personality and is an indication of what they might have in store for the judges if they progress through the competition. The dish must demonstrate skill and a decent palate, and the cooks will have a generous 90 minutes to create a great first impression. After tasting all six plates, the judges will pick their two favourites, and those cooks will see their culinary credibility skyrocket as they don their very own MasterChef apron and head into the next round.\n \nThe other four cooks will need to dust themselves off, as they only have one more shot at winning one of the two remaining quarter-final places. Getting noticed won’t be easy, as this time around, each of them will be re-creating the same dish in the classic recipe test. The sting in the tail is that the contestants will each have to cook without being party to some key information – measurements and timings! So, in addition to core cooking skills, they will need to rely on their culinary instinct. Grace has chosen this recipe, as it’s one of her favourite comfort-eats – a fish finger open-sandwich, served with tartare sauce and a pickle slaw. Brits are very passionate about fish fingers, but it takes a lot of skill to make them. The judges will be hoping for perfectly flaky fish and a crispy crumb coating that manages not to fall off in the pan, and the two cooks who manage to capture the majesty of this classic dish will live to fight another day.\n \nOne more task awaits the four cooks left standing, as they go all out for a place in this week’s quarter-final. The table in the dining room has been set for three special guests – 2023’s champion, Chariya Khattiyot, finalist Omar Foster and 2007 winner, Steven Wallis. All three have proven their salt in the MasterChef kitchen and know the ingredients needed for success, but it’s down to the four amateurs to delight them with their best courses. The pressure will be intense as the cooks only have 75 minutes to prove they are ready for what lies ahead. \n \nThe diners' feedback will be factored into Anna and Grace’s ultimate decision, which will see one more cook heading home, and the best three on the night bounding towards the quarter-final with an equal measure of excitement and trepidation.
