It's the final heat as the last group of food-obsessed cooks go all out to try to nab one of the last three quarter-final places in this year’s competition. To get there, they need to first win a MasterChef apron, before facing the culinary scrutiny of some specially invited guests. \n\nWinning one of these exclusive aprons doesn’t come easy, so the amateurs’ first task is a true test of their culinary mettle. They have each picked one ingredient to turn from Basic to Brilliant. The chosen item must be the star of the dish but also work well with the other ingredients on the plate. Mushrooms, cauliflower and tomatoes are among the picks, foods that should lend themselves to a vast range of creative endeavours.\n\nThose who impress the most get to model their new MasterChef threads and head straight into the next round, leaving the remaining cooks with one more chance to make the cut. Their next task is even tougher as they lift the Mystery Box and reveal the secret ingredients: bread, potatoes and bananas – three of the most commonly wasted foods in the UK. Can they create a delicious dish that encompasses at least one of those ingredients, or might they serve up an unappetising potato and banana sandwich? Stranger things have happened. After this round, two cooks will depart, leaving those left standing braced for their final task. \n\nThings conclude with a visit from three special guest diners looking forward to some MasterChef-worthy dishes. The four amateurs have to serve up their best two-course menu for 2006 finalist Dean Edwards, 2015 champion Ping Coombes and the very first MasterChef champion, Thomasina Miers, who won way back in 2005. These diners know their stuff and won’t hold back if their plates are not up to scratch. Given the standard of food delivered so far in the competition, they will no doubt be in for a real treat. \n\nThe three cooks who have done enough will claim their place in the last quarter-final of MasterChef 2025.
